People say a lot of things. Words are amazing and are capable of great results. Words of advice can teach someone. Words of inspiration can lift spirits, even the ones who feel like they’ve hit
rock bottom. Words can help. Words can also hurt. Words can even destroy.
But in the end, words are just words. Things you do are far more effective and meaningful than the things you say.
I have recently been writing a lot of “personal statements” (in order to study abroad in Tokyo for January 2010). These short essays are suppose to explain why I am applying and how participating in the program will benefit me. A recurring thought that came up in all my statements was the things I wanted to achieve. The more I talked about what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do, I realized I didn’t have much under my belt.
Think about it for a minute. Who are the most interesting people you know? More times than not, they are the ones who have accomplished something worthwhile. This gives them concrete things to talk about.
In the end: be active. Get involved with things you care about. Set standard and goals. And then get them done. Strive for your dreams, no matter how ridiculous you may think they are.
